Admission to Public Discussion

The request for admission to Public Discussion must be made by the student on the FenixEdu Platform, using his/her access credentials, and under Candidate » Applications, select the option “Master degree | Admission to Public discussion“.

The student can only make this request if he or she does not have any type of debt to FFUL.

The requests for admission are sent by the Academic Services for analysis by the Scientific Council until the 15th day of each month. The exams take place in accordance with the Procedures for the Conduct of 2nd Cycle Master’s Degree Examinations.

The final work is delivered exclusively in digital format. The work is subject to the compulsory deposit, under the responsibility of FFUL, of a digital copy in a repository belonging to the Open Access Scientific Repository of Portugal network, operated by the Foundation for Science and Technology, I. P., as well as for digital consultation through the Digital Repository of ULisboa.

RULES FOR THE FORMATTING OF FINAL WORK

The presentation of the final work must respect the following rules according to article 40 of the General Regulations of the Study Cycle leading to a Master’s Degree at FFUL:

The cover page must include the name and logo of ULisboa and FFUL, the title of the work, the full name of the student, the full name of the supervisors, the name of the specialty of the master’s degree and, if applicable, of the respective area of specialization, the modality of work in which it is presented (dissertation, internship report or project work) and the year of completion of the work.

The first page, must be a copy of the cover page.

The paper must include abstracts in Portuguese and English, with a maximum of 300 words each, up to 5 keywords in Portuguese and English, and indexes.

When the Scientific Board authorizes the presentation of the final paper written in English, it must be accompanied by an abstract in Portuguese of between 1200 words and 1500 words.

The final paper should not exceed 40,000 words (about 100 pages) and should be structured as follows

  • Cover;
  • First Page;
  • Abstract;
  • Dedication/Acknowledgements (if applicable);
  • Indexes;
  • Body of the work (includes introduction and conclusion);
  • Bibliography;
  • Annexes (if applicable).

The paper should conform to the following formatting rules:

  • Font: Times New Roman 12 or Arial 11;
  • Margins: minimum 2.5 cm on all four sides.

All questions about formatting that are not foreseen in the Regulation should be discussed with the supervisor(s).

The Jury Proposal is filled out by the Advisor(s) and sent by email to mestrados@ff.ulisboa.pt

The Jury Proposal is a document that is part of the application for admission to the exams, so it must be sent at the same time or soon after the application is made. Without this document the application cannot be considered by the Scientific Council.

DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED IN THE APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION TO PROOFS IN CASE OF CONFIDENTIALITY AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

In situations where it is necessary to ensure the confidentiality of the documents produced, the student, when applying for admission to exams, should request, in the application addressed to the Scientific Council, the delivery of final work in confidential format, as well as the confidentiality of the exams.

  • Application to the Scientific Board and the Master’s coordinator’s Statement (PDF);
  • Opinion of the supervisor(s), duly substantiated, justifying the confidentiality of the final work (PDF);
  • The final paper in its provisional version in PDF format with the mention “confidential” on the cover;
  • Curriculum Vitae (PDF);

The defense of the final paper is always a public act. All members present at the defense of the final work must sign the declaration of confidentiality, distributed by the President of the Jury, pledging not to disclose information discussed in the test, which is always held in public.

MAXIMUM TIME LIMITS FOR SCHEDULING THE PUBLIC DEFENSE ACT

The discussion of the final work is carried out in a public exam; the announcement of the exam includes the identification of the respective jury and must be posted in a public place at the FFUL and published on the FFUL website.

The public defense of the final work must be scheduled within 30 working days after the decision of acceptance by the Scientific Council, except in exceptional situations, duly justified and agreed upon by all parties.

The student will be notified of the scheduling of the exam up to 5 working days before it takes place.

RULES ON THE PUBLIC ACT OF DEFENSE

The discussion of the final work cannot exceed 90 minutes and all the members of the jury may participate. The student must have the same amount of time as the jury members.

Before the start of the public discussion of the final paper, the candidate must be allowed a period of up to 20 minutes to briefly present his/her paper.

The interventions of the examiner(s) and other members of the jury during the public discussion of the final work must not exceed 70 minutes overall.

The candidate has the same amount of time for answers as the members of the jury.

After approval in the public defense, and if the jury does not propose changes to the content of the final work, the student has 30 working days, non-extendable, counted from the date of the Public Exam, to submit in the FenixEdu Platform, the following documents:

REVISION

If the jury recommends the reformulation of the final work, the student has a period of 30 working days, non-extendable, counted from the communication of the supervisor, to proceed with its reformulation.

It is the advisor’s responsibility to gather all the rectifications to the final work and, within the next 5 working days after the defense, communicate them to the student, with the knowledge of the Academic Services. The corrections must be previously validated by the advisors.

Upon delivery of the reworked version, the student must deliver the Advisors Statement confirming the corrections requested by the jury.

If, after the deadline referred to in the previous number, the student has not delivered the final work, he will be subject to the payment of late fees, as provided for in the FFUL Emolument Table, and no certification will be issued for this academic act.

EMOLUMENT

The application for admission to academic examinations is subject to the payment of the amount provided for in the FFUL Emolument Table: 180.00 €.
