Recognised as one of the oldest and most influential rankings in Higher Education, the Shanghai Ranking once again included the University of Lisbon among the top 300 universities worldwide, and the highest-ranked in Portugal.

Updated annually since 2003, this year’s ranking assessed more than 2,500 universities, selecting only the top 1,000 for publication.

The evaluation is based on six performance indicators: the number of alumni and faculty awarded a Nobel Prize or Fields Medal, the number of highly cited researchers, articles published in leading scientific journals (Nature and Science), the volume of publications indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index, as well as the institution’s per capita academic performance.
