Rui Santos Ivo, professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon and president of INFARMED, has been elected president of the Management Board of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), succeeding Lorraine Nolan. This election reinforces the recognition of his vast experience in the regulation of medicines and the confidence of the Member States in his capacity for leadership.

With a solid track record in the sector, Rui Santos Ivo has represented Portugal on the EMA’s Board of Directors since 2016, has been chair of the Heads of Health Technology Assessment Agencies Group (HAG) since 2021 and was appointed vice-chair of the body he will now chair in October 2024. His term on the EMA will last three years.

Rui Santos Ivo emphasised the importance of an agile and efficient EMA in a context of rapid change and legislative challenges, ensuring the EU’s high standards in the protection of human and animal health. Emer Cooke, Executive Director of the EMA, welcomed the appointment, emphasising Rui Santos Ivo’s in-depth knowledge of the European regulatory system and his essential role in implementing the EMA’s strategy until 2028.

This appointment strengthens the position of Portugal and INFARMED in the regulation of medicines in Europe and recognises the national contribution to public health in the European Union.
