Advanced Course on Herbal Medicines

Overview

The Advanced Course on Herbal Medicines includes an introduction to the quality, safety, mode of action as well as regulatory and pharmaceutical development aspects of medicinal plant-based medicines in accordance with the European vision and rules.

This course takes place in partnership with the Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, under the terms of an institutional collaboration protocol in force, which aims to develop training actions and research projects in partnership with FFUL, in the field of herbal medicines.

This course is particularly aimed at master’s and doctoral students from the Jiangxi University of Traditional Medicine, but is also open to graduates with an interest in the subject.

The course will be taught entirely in English, and a good command of the language is required.

Programme

This course will run from September 15, 2025 to December 15, 2025, in person at FFUL.

The course will take place from Monday to Friday, during the day.

The training hours are distributed as follows:

  • Theoretical training hours: 84 hours
  • Practical Hours: 34 hours
  • Laboratory training hours: Laboratory classes will be integrated into tutorial teaching
  • Tutorial Hours: 201 hours

The course has a total of 420 hours of training, which is equivalent to a total of 15 ECTS.

COURSE PROGRAM

Teaching Methodologies

Teaching methodology: Each unit is designed to offer a balanced combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, essential for a multidisciplinary and up-to-date course. Theoretical classes, seminars and case discussions, laboratory work and project development. The course will be taught in English.

Learning and skills to be acquired by the student: To learn about and acquire skills in the use of the most representative medicinal plants in Europe, considering their quality, safety and efficacy when used in the form of herbal medicines or their quality and safety when used as food supplements, in accordance with European standards. To learn about the methodology for producing medicines and other herbal products, in particular food supplements, in accordance with European standards.

Assessment methodology: Continuous assessment through the completion and oral presentation of individual and group work, presentation of seminars, active participation in face-to-face discussions.

Applicant Qualifications:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences or related fields, obtained nationally or internationally.

 

Selection and seriation criteria:

Students will be selected based on their academic qualifications and other information contained in their curriculum vitae.

  • Minimum number of trainees for operation: 06
  • Maximum number of trainees for operation: 16

Please Note: the course has as an essential requirement of oral and writen English language proficiency.

Application Fees and Tuition:

  • Application fee: 10€ (Note: the application fee will not be refunded if the candidate is excluded or not selected).
  • Course Tuition: 2.100,00€ (*)
  • School Insurance Fee: 2,10€

Application Process:

Applications for the course are made exclusively through the FenixEdu Platform of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon (FFUL).

Access to the FenixEdu Platform:

Access the FenixEdu Platform.

  • On the tab “Candidate”, choose the type of application: “Non Degree Courses”, select the desired course.
  • Fill out the online form and attach all the required documents in digital format. In the application process you can indicate whether you want the invoice to be issued in the name of another entity/company/institution.
  • Select the “Submit” option.

Applications will only be validated by the Academic Services once the applicant has paid the Application Fee.
