Admission to PhD Public Discussion

The application for admission to proofs is completed with the student submitting the documentation indicated in Order CC/No.2/2023 – Final work in digital format.

The student can only present this application if they are not in any type of debt to FFUL.

The requests for admission to the public Discussion are sent by the Academic Services for analysis by the Scientific Council until the 15th working day of each month.

The final work is delivered exclusively in digital format. The work is subject to the compulsory deposit, under the responsibility of FFUL, of a digital copy in a repository belonging to the Open Access Scientific Repository of Portugal network, operated by the Foundation for Science and Technology, I. P., as well as for digital consultation through the Digital Repository of ULisboa.

RULES FOR THE FORMATTING OF FINAL WORK

Article 26 of the General Regulations for the Doctoral Degree Program at FFUL:

The cover of the thesis must include the name and logo of ULisboa and FFUL, the title of the work, the name of the student, the name of the supervisors, the branch and specialty of the doctoral degree, the year of completion, and an indication that it is a document especially prepared for obtaining the degree of Doctor.

The title page (first page) must be identical to the thesis cover and may mention any collaborations or financial entities.

The thesis must include abstracts in Portuguese and in another official language of the European Union, with a maximum of 300 words each, up to 5 keywords in Portuguese and in another official language of the European Union, and indexes.

When, in accordance with specific regulations, the thesis is written in a foreign language, it must be accompanied by a more developed abstract in Portuguese, with a length of between 1200 and 1500 words.

DOCUMENTS TO BE DELIVERED IN THE REQUEST FOR ADMISSION TO PROOFS

Go to the FenixEdu Platform, under Candidature ” Applications, and select the option “Admission to 3rd Cycle Examinations”.

Documentation:

  • Application addressed to the President of the Scientific Council;
  • Thesis in PDF format with the mention “Provisional Document”;
  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • Opinion of the supervisor and co-supervisor(s), duly signed and dated, on the conformity of the thesis to be submitted to evidence in PDF format;
  • Cover and title page of the thesis in PDF format;
  • Libraries statement;
  • Embargo statement, if applicable;

Jury Proposal – The advisor must send by email, doutoramentos@ff.ulisboa.pt , the jury proposal, indicating the full name, updated category, institution (with the indication of the country when foreign) and email address of all members of the jury.

The jury proposal is a document that is part of the application for admission to the exams, so it must be sent at the same time or soon after the application is made. Without this document the application cannot be considered by the Scientific Council.

The application for admission to evidence is subject to payment of the amount provided for in the Fees Table of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon.

Requests for admission to evidence are sent by the Academic Services for analysis by the Scientific Council until the 15th of each month.

DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED IN THE APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION TO EVIDENCE IN CASE OF CONFIDENTIALITY AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

Documentation:

  • Application addressed to the President of the Scientific Council;
  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • Statements from the Advisor and Co-Advisor(s) justifying the request for confidentiality of the final work as well as the evidence;
  • A file of the Thesis in its provisional version containing the mention “Confidential Provisional Document” on the cover, in PDF format;
  • Cover page and cover sheet of the thesis in PDF format;
  • Libraries declaration;
  • Embargo Declaration.

DEADLINES FOR SCHEDULING THE PUBLIC ACT OF DEFENSE

The discussion of the final work is held in a public exam, and the announcement of the exams includes the identification of the respective jury and must be posted in a public place at the FFUL and published on the FFUL website.

The public defense of the final work must be scheduled within 30 working days from the date on which the thesis or equivalent work was accepted by the jury, except in exceptional situations, duly justified and agreed upon by all parties.

The student will be notified of the scheduling of the exam up to 10 working days before it takes place.

RULES FOR THE PUBLIC VIVA

The examination shall be carried out in person. The holding of tests in a mixed system, that is, with elements present and at a distance, is an exception that depends on valid justification before the Scientific Council and the existence of technical conditions for its realization. When the mixed system is used, at least the president of the jury, the doctoral candidate, and the member of the orientation team that is part of the jury must be present.

The discussion of the final paper must not exceed 150 minutes and all members of the jury may participate, and the student must have the same amount of time as the jury members.

The participation of members of the audience is allowed, provided that the totality of questions and answers does not exceed five minutes.

Distribution of test times by student and jury members:

  • Before the start of the public discussion, the candidate must be given a period of up to 20 minutes to present his/her work. Jury members’ interventions may not exceed 62.5 minutes overall. The candidate also has 62.5 minutes, including the initial presentation period.

DOCUMENTS TO BE DELIVERED AFTER PUBLIC VIVA

After approval in the public defense, and if the jury does not propose changes to the content of the final work, the student has 30 working days, non-extendable, counted from the date of the test, to submit in the FenixEdu Platform, the following documents:

  • The final version of the Thesis in PDF format;
  • Statement from the Advisor or Co-Advisor indicating that the version submitted is the final version to be included, according to the legislation in force, in the Repository of the University of Lisbon (PDF).
  • After submitting the documents, you must hand in 1 paper copy (thermal binding) of the work in its final version at the Academic Services, along with a file of the Thesis in digital format in its final version in PDF format.

Documentation to be submitted in case of confidential evidence:

  • The final version of the Thesis in PDF format (final version of a public nature);
  • Statement from the Advisor or Co-Advisor indicating that the version submitted is the final version to be included, according to the legislation in force, in the Repository of the University of Lisbon (PDF);
  • Declaration regarding the availability for digital consultation through the ULisboa Digital Repository (PDF) and fill in the ULisboa Repository Data Tab;
  • After submitting the documents, you must hand in 1 paper copy (thermal binding) final final public version of the work at the Academic Services, along with a file of the Thesis in digital format in its final version in PDF format.

REVISION

If the jury recommends the reformulation of the final work, the doctoral candidate has an unextendable period of 30 working days, counting from the communication from the advisor, to proceed with its reformulation.

The rectifications must be previously validated by the supervisor.

Upon delivery of the reformulated version, the student must deliver the Advisor’s/CoSupervisor’s Statement confirming the corrections requested by the jury.

The application for admission to academic examinations is subject to the payment of the amount established in the FFUL fee schedule: 500.00 €.
