Environmental sustainability has become a strategic priority for Universidade de Lisboa and to Faculty of Pharmacy (FFUL). We are committed to actively participating in actions taking place in society in general, and in the city of Lisbon in particular, to implement efficient resource management and sustainability in the urban space of the University Campus, which includes the faculty.

With this challenge in mind, FFUL applied for the Recovery and Resilience Program in the context of energy efficiency. This project, with funding of €4,922,860.52, aims to reduce primary energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 63%, transforming the faculty into a sustainable and low-resource consumption campus, with high standards of energy and water efficiency, while promoting sustainable work (and life) models, creating an “environmentally friendly environment.” The project will be carried out until May 2025 and includes interventions in seven faculty buildings, with five types of intervention: 1. opaque and glazed envelope, 2. technical systems, 3. energy production for self-consumption from renewable sources, 4. water efficiency, and 5. intangible actions to support its execution.

The profound transformation of the buildings will result in an A+ energy rating for the seven buildings, which will be equipped with bioclimatic architecture, the capacity to produce photovoltaic energy for self-consumption, and technical management using artificial intelligence applied to efficient management of energy and water consumption and maintenance needs.

This commitment has posed a significant challenge for the entire FFUL community, as it impacts the logistics and functioning of the institution at every moment to ensure ongoing activities are not affected. Teaching, research, and all day-to-day support and management work of the faculty must continue. It is a journey we are undertaking together, with a spirit of dedication and continuous motivation, keeping in mind the individual, institutional, and societal benefits we will achieve.

In this paradigm shift journey, FFUL is committed to actively contributing to minimizing and mitigating the adverse consequences of climate change, which are already a reality. For a sustainable planet, thinking about future generations.
