Research Methods and Knowledge of the Use of Medicinal Plants

In line with the objectives of the Faculty of Pharmacy of Universidade de Lisboa (FFUL) and integrated into the recently launched educational and scientific cooperation project “Chinese-Portugal International Joint Laboratory on Herbal Medicines”, extracurricular training in herbal medicines is proposed for 10 Integrated Master Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences’ students.

The aim of this training is to introduce research methods and knowledge about the use of medicinal plants in traditional Chinese medicine and to enable close contact with Chinese culture, promote intercultural exchange of experiences and enrich students as global citizens.

During the training, each student has the opportunity to learn Chinese herbal medicine processing methods, pharmacological effects, safety and quality assessment methods and better understand and develop their skills.

The training program includes the following theoretical and practical activities during 40 hours, which corresponds to a total working time of 80 hours:

  • Subject 1: Chinese Medicinal Plants Resources
  • Subject 2: Medicinal Plants Marker Compounds
  • Subject 3: Pharmacology of Chinese Medicinal Plants
  • Subject 4: Chinese Medicinal Plants Processing and Pharmaceutical Preparations
  • Subject 5: Chinese Herbal Medicines Analysis

Two FFUL professors (Prof. Dr. Beatriz Lima and Prof. Dr. Olga Silva), who are directly involved in the conception of the China-Portugal International Joint Laboratory on Herbal Medicines, will be responsible for, together with the Jiangxi University of Chinese Medicine, accompanying the students.

The expenses related with the accommodation, transport and food will be covered by the Jiangxi University of Chinese Medicine under the scope of the joint laboratory project.

The training is conducted in English.

The training is intended to be considered as an extension to the FFUL Integrated Master Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Admission Requirements

The programme is open to students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th years of the Integrated Master Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences who have:

  • 3rd year: Attended the Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology I curricular units and approved them during the first semester of the 2024/2025 academic year;
  • 4th year: Approved the Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology I curricular units;
  • 5th year: Approved the Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology I curricular units;
  • Attended or enroled in the optional curricular unit of Medicinal Plants and Phytotherapy, if available.

Deadlines: 1 to 31 January 2025

The application is submitted exclusively online through the FenixEdu Portal of the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Documents:

  • Proof of completion of the required curricular units (proof of enrolment or approvement certificate depending on the admission requirements);
  • A letter of motivation in which is expressed the interest in the field of herbal medicines and in this training;
    • Reference should be made to the importance of this type of activity for individual and academic development and to enrolment or completion of the optional Medicinal Plants and Phytotherapy curricular unit, if available;
  • Copy of the passport, which must be valid until, at least, November 2025.

Results

The results will be shared by email to each admitted candidate by 17 February 2025.

Selection Criteria

The selection of candidates is carried out by a jury, based on:

  • Evaluation of the admission conditions: 30%
  • Letter of motivation analysis: 35%
  • Interview: 35%

Attendance or enrolment in the optional curricular unit of Medicinal Plants and Phytotherapy at FFUL will also be a factor taken into consideration in the event of a tie during the application selection process.

The analysis of the documents and the interviews will take place until February 16th.
