Learning outcomes

Over the course of Pharmacognosy, the student must:
Knowing the different groups of secondary metabolites with therapeutic importance existing in the plant kingdom;
Knowing the medicinal plants commonly used in herbal medicines;
Knowing the quality control procedures to analyze medicinal plants and preparations based on its.
To be familiar with the laws that is subject herbal medicines and other health herbal products;
Have acquired research skills necessary to validate the claimed attributes for use of herbal medicines and other health herbal products;
Have developed critical scientific skills necessary for correct interpretation and evaluation of the material consulted;
Have developed skills of speech and oral presentation of technical papers;
Having realized the need for constant updating of its technical and scientific skills, not only in order to guarantee their professional value but also to can consciously perform their professional obligations to society.

Syllabus

Theoretical teaching
Pharmacognosy: Concept and historical context.
EU guidelines: The status of herbal medicines.
Production and conservation of medicinal plants.Structure, occurrence and pharmacological properties of the main constituents of it.
Quality control of medicinal plants and preparations based on it – the European and Portuguese Pharmacopoeias. Metabolomic profile.
Laboratorial teaching
Botanical identification of senna leaf; ginkgo leaf; chamomile flower; hawthorn leaf and flower; Indian senna fruit; alder buckthorn bark; valerian root.
Flavonoids as a marker of the presence of hawthorn leaf and flower in herbal medicines.
Anthraquinones as a marker group the presence of alder buckthorn bark in herbal medicines.
Organoleptic characteristics, identification and dosage procedures of drugs with essential oil (chamomile flower and valerian root).
Evaluation of the anti-oxidant activity of medicinal plants and herbal health products and their correlation with chemical composition.
