Learning outcomes

The aim of the programme is to promote the acquisition/enhancement of knowledge and abilities that allow the characterization of the etiologic agents with major health care, and an integrated analysis of the various steps to its diagnosis, and to provide students with an understanding of the theoretical and practical skills of traditional and novel concepts in mycology and parasitology, and critical awareness needed to enable students to pursue a career in these areas. Thus, the competences to be developed include: know the relationship of these organisms with the man, recognize the most important diseases in humans, be familiar with the drugs used in the treatment and prophylaxis, identify these organisms based on morphological and physiological characteristics, have adequate knowledge of biology and epidemiology of fungal and parasitic diseases in order to design prevention and control strategies, and apply theoretical knowledge the laboratory practice.
The curricular unit offers a great contact with the practical and theoretical aspects of a wide range of clinically relevant pathogens and laboratory management.


The program of Mycology–Parasitology course provides the students with basic theoretical and practical aspects of various groups of medical important fungi and parasites and the diseases they cause. Structure, function and physiology, reproduction, classification and identification, laboratory techniques and methods of handling of these microorganisms, and the influence of these microorganisms on human health and disease will be discussed. Emphasis in this course will be on the fungi and parasite diseases the most relevant and their clinical presentation, pathogenesis, modes of transmission, laboratory diagnosis, prevention and control as well as knowledge about antifungal and antiparasitc agents with emphasis on the different mechanisms of drug resistance.
