PhD Programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences

The PhD Program  in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Universidade de Lisboa focuses on translational research leading to the discovery of therapeutic targets and pharmaceutical design, as well as pre-clinical development and drug safety assessment. This is a cycle of interdisciplinary studies with a strong institutional and international cooperation promoted by a highly qualified teaching staff.

The PhD Programme  in Pharmaceutical Sciences has a duration of 4 years and is divided into 8 semesters, with a total of 240 ECTS.

3. Create a user account on the  FenixEdu Portal:

  • If you have never been a student at FFULisboa you must necessarily pre-register on the FenixEdu Platform.
  • If you are a former FFULisboa student and have already had a Campus/Edu student account, you must access the FenixEdu Platform and log in with your account details.
  • If you have lost access to your account, you can recover your password in the ULisboa user area.
  • If you are a former FFULisboa student and have never had a Campus/Edu account, you should send an email to doutoramentos@ff.ulisboa.pt stating your full name and ID number.

4. Once you have created your access credentials, you must access the FenixEdu Platform.

5. After accessing the Fénix Platform, in the Applicant tab, choose the Type of Application: Doctorate in Pharmacy National and European Union Citizens or Doctorate in Pharmacy International Students and fill in the required fields;

6. The application is complete when you click the Submit button.

Doctoral Course

The first year corresponds to the “Doctoral Course” with 60 ECTS and consists of the following curricular components:

  • PhD Seminar I: comprises 2 Advanced Training Courses, each with 6 ECTS, and 2 laboratory rotations, each with 6 ECTS;
  • Research Methodology Seminar I: comprises the start of the research project, totalling 6 ECTS;
  • PhD Seminar II: comprises 2 Advanced Training Courses, each with 6 ECTS, and 2 laboratory rotations, each with 6 ECTS;
  • Research Methodology Seminar II: It includes a conference on the subject, for a total of 2 ECTS, and the defense of the Advanced Training Course, for a total of 4 ECTS.

The remaining semesters of the PhD program correspond to the research work leading to the preparation of an original PhD thesis.

Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements

The applicants should be:

  • Holders of a master’s degree or legal equivalent, with a minimum classification of Good (or 14 points), in areas related to Pharmaceutical Sciences.
  • Holders of a bachelor’s degree or legal equivalent, with a minimum grade of Good or 14 points, in areas related to Pharmaceutical Sciences, who have a particularly relevant academic or scientific curriculum that is recognised by the Scientific Council of FFUL as attesting to their ability to complete this cycle of studies;
  • Exceptionally, the holders of an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this Cycle of Studies by the Scientific Council.

The recognition referred to in paragraphs b) and c) is granted by a team by two PhD professors or researchers, considered experts in the scientific field of study and appointed by the coordinator of the corresponding study cycle.

Documents

Applications are only considered when supported by the following documents:

  1. Document proving the holder’s bachelor’s or master’s degree, indicating the final grade obtained and identifying the higher education institution that awarded it;
  2. Curriculum vitae duly updated, including documents proving the publications/activities mentioned in the CV.
  3. Motivation letter setting out the reasons for choosing the course;
  4. Presentation of a research proposal indicating the doctorate specialty, stating the object of study, the research objectives, and methodological elements, duly framed in reference bibliography. The proposal must be submitted in conjunction with a previously defined supervisory team and a thesis topic that has already been identified, in accordance with the scientific areas of the course;
  5. Copy of the identification Card, Citizen Card, or Passport, for personal data validation, and 1 colour Photo.
  6. International Student Declaration, in case of international students.
  7. Other elements considered relevant by the candidate for the purposes of assessing the application.

Documents proving applicants’ qualifications must be issued by the competent authority in the country where the qualifications were obtained and, when issued by institutions in another country, they must be legalized by a Portuguese consular agent or by the Hague Apostille, these legalizations being carried out in the country of origin of the documents. Whenever they are not issued in Portuguese, English or Spanish, they must be translated into one of these languages.

All documents must be attached, in PDF format, on the application platform. If any of the mandatory documents are divided into several files, they must be compiled into a single ZIP or RAR file.

Applications that are not accompanied by all the requested documents will be rejected outright.

Enrollment and Registration

Enrolment and registration take place within the time limits established in the FFULisboa Academic Deadlines Map.

Start of the doctoral course:

  • For applicants admitted in the 1st semester of the 2026/2027 academic year – September/October 2026;
  • For applicants admitted in the 2nd semester of the 2026/2027 academic year – February 2027.

Application and Tuition Fees

The application fee is €75 (seventy-five euros), which will not be refunded if the applicant is excluded or not selected.

  • Application fee: 75,00 €*
  • Registration fee: 25,00 €
  • Tuition fee: 2750 € /year.

The tuition fee is annual and, for the 2025/2026 academic year, will be set by the General Council of the Universidade de Lisboa at €2,750.00 (two thousand seven hundred and fifty euros). Payment deadlines and installments will be indicated at the beginning of the academic year.

Students must pay the first installment of tuition fees, school insurance and the enrollment or registration fee at the time of enrolment.

Application for a grant from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT)

The call for doctoral research grants from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) is held annually. It is up to the applicants, together with their supervisors, to apply to this institution.

After acceptance and respective enrolment in FFUL’s Doctoral Program in Pharmacy, the Academic Services will issue any document required for the granting of the same.
